In collaboration with Håkan Ullberg, I curated a unique photography exhibition by photographer and comedian Dave Brown at Berns in Stockholm.

In the UK, Brown is best known for his character Bollo the Gorilla in the hugely popular, award-winning comedy show The Mighty Boosh. As well as being broadcast as a TV series on the BBC, The Mighty Boosh has had two sell-out tours of the UK, as well as shows in the USA and Australia. In the show, Dave Brown plays Bollo the Gorilla, a popular and well-known character among the British public. And it was due to his role as Bollo the Gorilla that he was invited to spend a few hours with the real-life gorilla Mjukuu at Chessington Zoo, south of London. The encounter resulted in a number of fantastic photos and a semi-final place in the prestigious Wildlife Portrait Awards. Some of these photos were exhibited at Berns Asiatiska, together with images from the series Tough Crowd, which presents photographic portraits of other successful British comedians recalling their worst ever gigs.

It’s fantastic to host such a high caliber photographer and creative here at Berns.

Berns Art Director, Håkan Ullberg’s first hand picked vernissage at Berns together with Stockholm/London based award winning curator Jenny Theolin turned out to be a popular premiere for Dave Brown. With a careful eye Dave has captured colourful, detailed and alive photographic art work that are now on show both in the restaurant and hotel sections of Berns Salonger. Nearly everyone’s favourite of the premiere night was the photograph of British comedian Andi Osho from the Tough Crowd selection.

Review

As a photographer, I fell and fall in love with the glances he captures and applaud greatly the stark yet melodic contrast of the collection. I have never been a talented curator but Jenny Theolin takes the prize for this exhibit!
