OPINION: The Biggest Myth in Education

I completely agree with Muller's perspective that teaching to learning styles has no scientific evidence to support it. In fact, it can lead to a fixed mindset in which learners limit their potential by believing that their abilities are predetermined and unchangeable.

In this video, Derek Muller challenges the popular belief that catering to students' preferred learning styles can improve learning. He argues that instead of relying on this myth, we should focus on evidence-based teaching methods that have been shown to be effective in promoting long-term learning and retention.

Some of the evidence-based teaching methods he refers to in the video include:

☑️ Interleaving: mixing up different types of problems or concepts during practice

☑️ Spaced repetition: spacing out practice sessions over time
Retrieval practice: recalling information from memory

☑️ Metacognition: teaching students to think about their own thinking and learning processes.

If you're still reading, here are some more NOT mentioned in the video.

✅ Active learning: hands-on activities and discussions

✅ Peer teaching: students teaching and explaining concepts to each other

✅ Feedback: timely and constructive feedback to students

✅ Gamification: the use of game-like elements to make learning more engaging.

✅ Project-based learning: students work on a relevant and meaningful project to promote deeper learning and retention.

You're welcome! :)
